SCS IMPLEMENTATIONS
I unconsiously started to build SCSs since 1985. I have created 5 systems:
a) a Paper-System, b) a DBASEIV (I spend many hours for nothing!!),
c) a Folio-Views DOS, d) a Folio-Views Win,
and e) the jSCS.
- PAPER SCS:
- My first "System". Every concept belonged to independed
paper sheets. Quickly became apparent that as the quantity of
knowledge increased the same happened to the effort to manage
this knowledge.
---
- FOLIO-VIEWS WIN SCS:
-
It is a primitive SCS using the
Folio Views
hypertext program. This program uses a proprietary markup language.
I created a workable system with a Knowledge-base of about 12.000
structured-concepts. I'm holding in this system much of the knowledge I know and
I consult it any time I have my computer open. (In contrast the java
system have functions a real scs must have but it is not yet a workable one)
FUNCTIONS:
Knowledge-Retrieval: Searching is the notable function.
I have a file (Infobase in folio-views terms) with all synonyms
of my concepts. With a simple notation I find easily the concept I want.
Then from the synonyms-infobase I have links to the actual concepts.
For example: writing the word
"computer" I have 220 hits. This means that
I have 220 concepts which have in its name the word 'computer'.
But writing "computer-" I see on the left "computer-227". Then I
fill up the number 227 and then I have ONE hit, the concept 'computer'.
Concept Relations: I'm doing inherittance semi-manually.
The program finds the general-attributes and then I copy them!!
Definition's Vicious-Circle Problem: We always encounter this problem
in todays encyclopedias and dictionaries. I solved it in this system
by dividing the definitions into analytical and synthetical ones.
